Day 27: Sunday

Big Trouble in Little Charlie

Charlie slept with us last night. I got up to pee in the middle of the night and he was on the floor but when I got back in bed he jumped up on the side so I picked him up and he slept with us for the rest of the night. It was so lovely waking up to him!

We got up and ate breakfast and fed him then went for a pretty long walk through a trail in the woods at Van Courtlandt Park. It was his first experience in a heavily wooded area(that I know of). Mark had his leash and he stayed with us pretty good. Mark is eager to let him off the leash to roam around but I don't think he trusts us enough yet. I don't trust him enough that he will stay with us. Sometimes he doesn't come when he's called, etc. He's just not ready yet. Tomorrow, we will have had him for 28 days (4 weeks)!!! Such a short time. It feels like longer.

I was ridiculously humid today and it started sprinkling on the walk home. Charlie pooped twice on the walk!! And he peed once.

We got home, made lunch and decided to take the train in to White Plains to buy a new fan. We had two in the living room and one broke the other day. We put Charles in his crate with the iCam on and set out for our adventure. We didn't leave a light in in the room and the apartment gets dark pretty early because of a huge tree outside our windows, so we could only hear him howling. Lol. Poor pup pup.

We came home and the cage was about a foot and a half from the wall, he shredded up all the newspapers in the cage (put there in case he had an accident). He managed to pull some blankets off the bed and into the cage, where he chewed a hole in the sheet and blanket!! And there are scratches on the floor from the cage. That little brat! We showed him the blanket and said "no! bad dog" calmly and we fed him and took him out. It was raining and he was distracted by being scolded so he didn't do any business. We went home and Mark cleaned up the cage mess while I vacuumed (that makes three weeks in a row!! #imasuperadult).

Charles was not invited into bed. Bad doggie.

We are working with him every day on the "stay" command. Every time we leave a room, we tell him stay then come back a few seconds later and praise him for staying. It's going to be a long process but totally worth it, once he understands that we are coming back. He's also not a huge fan of his cage anymore :( He knows that when he has to go in there, we are leaving, so he skulks around. I'm not sure how to bring him back to loving it... We always keep the door open for him. Maybe we will make him sleep in there from now on?

He understands "sit" pretty well now. We are trying to teach him "paw" (shake). And oddly enough, he knows "drop it" or maybe it's a coincidence. Like I've mentioned before, he likes things that are white. Mark made him a braided rope toy out of some white cotton rope we had. He's uninterested in it!!

Can't figure this doggie out...
